A Message from the President Dear Friends: Following the success of our first "SFLINKS@SFJAZZ" concert in 2007, featuring the talents of legendary jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, the San Francisco Chapter of The Links, Inc. is pleased to invite you to join us to our 2008 "SFLINKS@SFJAZZ" fundraising event. This year, it is our distinct pleasure to join with the San Francisco Jazz Festival to -co-sponsor a concert with Grammy Award-nominated vocal combo Sweet Honey in the Rock at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco on October 4, 2008, 8:30 pm. Founded in 1973, Sweet Honey in the Rock is a female, African-American a cappella ensemble, with its roots in Gospel music, spirituals and hymns of the African-American church. The group's name comes from a religious parable in Psalm 81:16, which tells of a land so rich that when rocks were cracked open, honey flowed from them. The Links, Incorporated, founded in 1946, is an international African American women's organization, consisting of 12,000 women committed to leadership, friendship and service. Our 273 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia, Germany, The Bahamas, and South Africa, have a mission of service. The San Francisco Chapter was founded in 1950. Since that time, we have served our community through our many philanthropic endeavors. The proceeds of SFLINKS@SFJAZZ on October 4, 2008, will be donated to support our efforts to improve the lives of our local community. The San Francisco Chapter of the Links, Inc feels that it is important to highlight the brilliant contributions of legendary African American musicians, like Sweet Honey in the Rock and the genre of American music known as Jazz. Jazz music has the potential not only to uplift the African American community, but also to build bridges with other communities. We want people to appreciate and recognize these jazz giants as "living treasures" in our midst. We also wish to acknowledge the hard work that SFJAZZ has done over many years to keep this art form alive in the Bay Area." This year, we have decided to "go green", and will be selling our tickets entirely through the internet. Please click and purchase tickets online through the convenient link provided on this page. We hope you will join us! Yours, Alison Nicholas Metz, MD. Chapter President San Francisco Chapter of The Links, Inc. |
